3rd Annual Highlander Day of Service Recap

On April 22, 2017 over 395 UCR alumni, students, parents, staff, and community members participated in 19 community service projects throughout the country (and London!) as part of UCR’s 3rd Annual Highlander Day of Service. Highlanders volunteered for a variety of activities, including food drives, beach cleanups, and beautification projects to complete 1,087 hours of service.

This year:

  • 3,320 pounds of food were sorted for Feed America Riverside
  • 275 shrubs and two 24” box trees were planted, over 50 yards of re-purposed mulch were installed and 5 yards of sod, grass, and soil were removed on the UCR campus
  • 72 signs were painted, 600 seedlings were transplanted, 5 fruit trees were planted, 42 wheelbarrows of mulch were spread, 4 community garden plots were cleared for new gardeners, 60 pounds of oranges were picked, and 680 feet of row crops were cleaned up in the R’ Garden
  • 8 bags of trash were picked up between University Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard on Iowa Street in Riverside
  • 5,000 food packages were assembled to feed women, children, and seniors in Los Angeles County
  • 9,700 care packages were assembled for troops who are currently deployed and troops who recently finished boot camp to congratulate and send them off by the volunteers who assisted Operation Gratitude
  • 83 photos were hung, 24 bags of stuffed animals were sized and sorted into categories, books were organized, and season décor was sorted by holiday for the Friends of Upland Animal Shelter
  • 30 pounds of trash were picked up from Huntington State Beach
  • 2 large bags of trash were removed from the London Canal

….plus, much more!

If you were unable to make it out for a project, you can still support UCR by making a tax deductible gift to one of our ongoing projects.

We would like to give special recognition to the project leaders from each region that stepped up to organize events and serve as ambassadors to our Highlander volunteers. We couldn’t have done it without you!
