Alumnus & Poet Laureate Billy Collins to Appear on Colbert Report Tonight


UC Riverside alumnus & Poet Laureate Billy Collins (’71 Ph.D. English, ’65 M.A.) will be appearing on The Colbert Report tonight October 29 at 11:30 p.m. EST.

About Billy Collins

Poet Laureate for the United States from 2001-2003. Collins earned a B.A. in English from the College of the Holy Cross in 1963 and later his doctorate in Romantic Poetry from UCR. Collins remains a distinguished professor at Lehman College in the Bronx, NY, where he has taught for over 30 years. As U.S. Poet Laureate, Collins read his poem “The Names” at a special joint session of the United States Congress in 2002 to remember the victims of 9/11. Collins also instituted a high school program, Poetry 180, to get contemporary poems read aloud daily in class. His list of honors also includes the Oscar Blumenthal Prize, the Bess Hokin Prize, the Frederick Bock Prize, and the Levinson Prize.
