Would YOU hire you?

UCR Alumni Career Services envisions supporting every UCR Alumnus to excel in both their job search and in their ongoing careers. To that end you’ll find best practices in this blog to help you land that job, nail that interview and move on up.

Your Highlander Hints

As we welcome the Class of 2018 to the alumni family, give them your career advice or things you learned while at UCR on our LinkedIn Group Discussion or take the reverse mentoring approach and consider what you might learn from them in the workplace.

Upcoming Interview?

Join our webinar, Interview Success: How to Prepare, Perform and Follow Up to make sure you’re ready to make your case for candidacy. If you’re doing the hiring, join us to make sure you’re evaluating for the best hire.

Own Your Career Brandstart up of you

If you’re not managing your own professional image, someone else is. People are constantly observing behavior (whether online or in person) and forming theories as to your competence and commitment. Own what others say and think of you by learning our career branding best practices. Our library of webinars such as 5 Steps to Your Professional Brand or Ben Casnocha’s (the founder of LinkedIn) The Start Up of You is a great place to start.

Your Career Questions Answered

“I just graduated and have sent out hundreds of job applications but heard nothing. Any advice?”

The application is the first step, not the only step. Look for ways to make a live connection. Cross check LinkedIn and search for people to whom you might be mutually connected. Don’t forget UCR alumni who might respond favorably to a quick message such as, “I’m a new UCR grad who has applied to your company. Might you spare 10 minutes to talk with me about what it is like to work there?” Go to live events. Many millennials who are savvy online, neglect face-to-face events. Remember, nothing beats in-person interaction to find that internal booster.
